Oxygen project

Breathing New Life into Rural Healthcare Systems

In Partnership with the FREO₂ foundation (Australia)

Bringing Sustainable, Life-Saving Solutions to Underserved Communities

Working alongside the FREO₂ Foundation, I led efforts to improve and implement lifesaving oxygen facilities in rural Tanzania and Uganda, addressing critical gaps in medical oxygen delivery for newborns and young children.

Case Study: Life-Saving Oxygen Facilities Implementation

The Challenge

Healthcare facilities in rural Tanzania and Uganda face severe shortages of medical oxygen, which is essential for treating respiratory infections, childbirth complications, and neonatal emergencies. Many clinics lack reliable infrastructure, power supply, and trained personnel, leading to preventable deaths.

The Solution & Approach

I worked closely with healthcare partners to:
Assess Needs – Identified key gaps in oxygen infrastructure and access.
Deploy Tailored Solutions – Introduced sustainable oxygen facilities as a service, adapted to local conditions.
Train Healthcare Workers – Equipped 77 frontline clinicians with critical oxygen therapy skills and trained local technicians in maintenance and installation.
Establish Long-Term Impact – Integrated oxygen solutions into existing healthcare systems with local partners.

Results & Impact

1,763 newborns & children treated with lifesaving oxygen therapy.
77 healthcare workers trained for sustainable system maintenance.
✔ New protocols & locally led teams ensuring long-term success.

Looking Forward

Access to oxygen therapy is not just a medical necessity—it’s a lifeline. By strengthening local capacity and embedding sustainable solutions within healthcare systems, this initiative has laid the groundwork for long-term impact. Yet, many communities still face critical gaps in oxygen access, underscoring the need for continued innovation and collaboration.
